I guess the one of those projects, which was green lighted over coffe shop discussions.
@Ashwin : Couldn't agree any more.
God how do you tolerate such films! I had a mild blah attack while reading the story/or the lack of it. Hope you recover with the true blue coffee film, Coffee & Cigarettes.
Aah…Coffee & Cigarettes. Couldn't stand the randomness of the film. Though everyone I know who has liked the film swears on the same randomness. Different strokes.
As to tolerating it…i've somehow grown a thick skin…and the ability to watch anything without getting affected. I've actually sat through stuff like a Dharmendra-Ravi Kissen-Mukesh Khanna starrer called Agni Morcha…wonder how many would've seen it here. This is child's play.
I know you don't like it, actually remembered it after I left the comment. For me, it was a film I reviewed twice(another one that suffered that bad a fate was V for Vendetta, he he).
As of high tolerance towards bad cinema, that is an hard acquired virtue I guess.
I think there are 2 kinds of Bad Movies.
One which is Cheesy & Fun,. likes of Jaani Dushman Ek Anokhi Torture, Sandwich, Gunda. These movies are ridiculous, stupid, silly, but at the same time great fun to watch. Lost count of the number of times i watched Jaani Dushman, Ek Anokhi Torture.
And then there are movies like Vivaah, Mohabattein, K3G which are ridiculous, stupid, silly and MIND NUMBINGLY boring.
I can watch Jaani Dushman or even Emraan Hashmi's Train again & again. But not even a million dollars would make me want to watch Vivaah or Mohabattein or K3G for a second watch.
Agni Morcha surely belongs to the first category. Imagine a mute Mukesh Khanna as the villian.
BTW…I've gone thru the worst of the second as well. HAHK in a small village theatre…accompanied by 8 women (my mother and aunts). Now that was torture.
I can add so many to the second category, my favorite culprits would be all KJo films, JWM, Vipul Shah or Ravi Chopra films which are neither laughable nor moving in any which way.
Agni Morcha sounds fun. I even don't mind the loud late nineties actioners for the first category, like Baadal. Their world view regd terrorism and crime is revelatory! HAHK I have had similar tortures as that film was released in Raj Mandir in Jaipur which was more of a tourist spot than a theater, and I had to bloody take all the relatives there whenever luck frowned on me.
Loved the theatres in Jaipur. Raj Mandir, Ambar…hope they're still standing up against the multiplex onslaught. Was discussing on the FB page about the Drive-in theatre in Ahmedabad. I've seen films there for 5 bucks…lying down in a lawn with thick green grass…and waiters at your beck and call to get you anything. Movie picnics.
I used to frequent Gem, Motimahal, Premprakash was the favorite for its much famous 70 mm and DTS sound, then Laxmi Mandir was the one week theater. Raj Mandir was good but often used to screen films that just wouldn't leave!
Luckily when I entered my independent film excursions(not indie) multiplexes came up, like EP(entertainment paradise), Galaxy etc. These were not the boring mall versions but single story, sprawling movie places, I used to love EP, have seen many a 'multiplex' films there, like Samay, Company, Bhoot etc. I guess Jaipur has also given way to the mall culture now, and the old single screens are no longer the season. Last I went there Aug 2008 I saw Singh is King & Jaane tu back to back in Fun Cinemas, nothing like the good old experience.
BTW, if you like such discussions, Sethumadhavan used to do a series on single screens on PFC, I suspect you must be knowing about it but still mentioned.
Actually I've been wanting to do such a series here for a long time but I guess I'll wait for some more time before i start it. There are so many that just refuse to get erased from my memory. Ashoka, Randhir & the sleazy Novelty in Karnal, Satya Palace, Gagan & Rachna in Faridabad, Shiv, Shree, Natraj, Drive-In & Relief in Ahmedabad, Shiva, Skyline, Sterling & Sangeet in Hyd and Ashish & Sahakar Plaza in Bombay. Single screens anyday for me.
Interesting. I also saw a beautiful documentary in an NFDC set of the slow elimination of single screens, I guess it was made in some Gujarat city, in a quite unpretentious and investigative manner. I remember the last film they screened, Maine pyar kyun kiya.
I don't remember the name of the theater(guess it was Sangeet), but I had tried to write about the joy of discovering a film in a single screen on PFC long back. I am handicapped by websense, but the article was called 'Avakai Biryani & the tangy economics of love'.
I remember reading that.
Interestingly, most of the single screen theatres i've been to, have names starting with S.
