The 10 best murder mysteries in Hindi

murderMurder mysteries have been a favourite genre of mine when it comes to books. I’ve spent a major part of my school days gorging on Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ellery-Queen anthologies, Michael Innes, John Buchan and many more. I’m still game for a good murder mystery whenever I travel. But that’s about books.

Murder mysteries as films, on the other hand, have been disappointments more often than not. The thought that it may have a lot to do with the limitations of the medium as has occurred to me many a times. Especially for films made in India, where the standard bollywood elements like songs, melodrama etc. take away a lot from the film. But when one looks at some classic murder mysteries in film, that logic kind of tumbles like a set of dominoes. This was the premise behind drawing up a top 10 list of murder mysteries in Hindi.

There were a total of 25 films that qualified as good murder mysteries as per my opinion. With a sample size as huge as all hindi movies produced till date, I’m sure I might have missed a few good ones, but then, we have the comments section for that. I shortlisted the 25 to 12 and then moved on to the final rankings. The two films that missed out just by a hair’s breath are Gumnaam (1965) & Gupt (1997). Two directors managed to get on this list twice. One of them was a foregone conclusion, the other a pleasant surprise. And now, the top 10 countdown.

teesra-kaun10. Teesra Kaun? (1994)

Director : Partho Ghosh

Cast : Mithun Chakraborty, Chunkey Pandey, Rakesh Bedi, Satish Shah, Amol Palekar, Javed Jaffrey

This is the dark horse of the list. Three youngsters board a train from Howrah to Bombay and are pleasantly surprised to see their cine-idol in the same train. Their other co-passengers are an uptight family and a brooding loner. The daughter of the family is murdered at night, with the arrow of suspicion pointing at…who else but our 3 protagonists? With the help of the star, the three unravel the mystery and nab the real killer in a gripping climax. This was by far the best murder mystery of the 90’s. And though the performances were a bit over the top, save for Mithun Chakraborty (playing himself) and Amol Palekar, the film was maneuvered intelligently by Ghosh. Teesra Kaun? also marked the Hindi debut of Rituparna Sengupta.

samay9. Samay (2003)

Director : Robby Grewal

Cast : Sushmita Sen, Jackie Shroff, Sushant Singh

We had seen women cops earlier in tacky bollywood dramas (Hema Malini in Andha Kanoon, Madhavi in Geraftaar & Vijaya Shanti in Tejaswini are some examples). But Samay was a first in its league. It pitted a woman cop against a serial killer in a murder mystery. Loosely inspired by the David Fincher classic, Seven, but without its psychological complexities, Samay is an out and out murder mystery with Sushmita & the killer playing an intense cat & mouse game. No points for guessing the victor, but this film also had one of the most un-bollywoodesque climax I’ve ever seen. To an extent, the commercial failure of the film could be attributed to the climax as it was a tad whacky for Indian audiences to digest. But despite its commercial failure, Samay would remain an important film due to a strong female protagonist and an engaging murder mystery. This film wouldn’t have been on this list had it not been for the brilliant performance by Sushmita Sen as ACP Malvika Singh. One of her best ever IMO.

I watched Khoj today,It is OK , Not that great as actors overact too much, including veterans Naseeruddiand an satish shah etc.

BTW some questions come to my mind, doubt if they are goofs:

        1. Why would police go for such elaborate drama , when they have the dead body of wife with strangulation as the reason?. They would directly take him to court straightaway.

        2. When Rishi is in Delhi in his office, his wife calls him and asks him to come back to Kathmandu, but she is already missing or dead ?
Otherwise how can he walk to their house and find her missing?..then who called him on phone?

No denying that it is a movie with some loopholes, yet I somehow found this movie to be interesting. Moreover, the entire movie was full of activity. It’s not like one of those movies that the entire 2.5 hours are wasted on foolish songs and sluggish drama and a startling revelation comes at the end. Each sequence of the movie had something going on. It just kept me busy and intrigued.

        Spoiler below:

As much as I gathered, the Police recovered the body of the strangled dead woman and they just had a hunch that she had been strangulated/murdered by her own man. The entire set up was to entice the guilty into confession.

It was indeed his wife who called him. However, he came much before his anticipated arrival and was shocked to find his wife in compromising position. He must have had a spare keys for the apartment they occupied. First time when he got into the apartment, she was not missing. Perhaps it appeared so.

The actor ( I still believe it was Amitabh but not sure, saw this atleast 10 yrs back and not able to trace it till now ).walking along a lonely road. He suddenly finds someobe murdered at a store ( jewellery store, I believe ). I think he is implicated or donno whether he is a police inspector.

Sadly, this was all I had seen and my mother switched off the tv as it was late and I was a small then.

Nice overall list. Can't think of too many other movies that would have been missed. We have so few Bollywood movies in this genre really.

"Khoj" is another movie which really maintained the suspense well. Ramsay's first foray into a non horror movie. I enjoyed it for Kimi Katkar but the movie itself despite maintaining the suspense was sort of bad.

100 days was another popular murder mystery which I absolutely loathed. But given that we have so few movies in this genre, I guess 100 days should get listed as well in the top 25 :-)

Gr8 2 see kanoon at the top of the list…saw in on DD in the 90's & was impressed by the fact that it din't have any songs…havn't seen all the films in the list by I think I would have put Manorama SFU in the top 3…especially Samay looked more or less a direct lift from Seven rather than an inspiration…

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  10. Bollyfan says:

Jitaditya : Apart from being a film with no songs, Kanoon was also amongst the most layered of Hindi films of all time. And Manorama SFU was in the second rank on this list, but went out finally as IMO, it didn't fit the definition of a murder mystery. A murder just happened to be a plot point in the entire proceedings. As for Samay, Sushmita's performance was what tilted the scales in its favour.

Ravi : Khoj & 100 days are good reminders. But I doubt if either of the two would've made the top 10.

In my opinion the complete list of murder mysteries and thrillers with some old movies should also include:

    1. . Budhdha mil gaya ( navin nischol, Deven and Omprakash_ excellent music and great suspense by Hrishikesh mukherjee too)
    2. Mahal 1969-Dev Anand, asha parekh- excellent suspense
    3. The Train – Rajesh Khanna, Nanda- can't guess the killer
    4. Woh Kaun thi- sadhana, manoj kumar
    5. Madhumati- Dilip and Madhubala ( see the climax and observe SRK's Om shanti Om's)
    6. Ajanabee – Rajesh khanna, Zeenat ( great music and a murder -both)
7 Baat ek raat ki- Dev anand, waheeda rehman
    8. Anamika _ sanjeev kumar, jaya bhaduri
    9.Uljhan- Sanjeev kumar, sulakshana pandit
10.parwana – Amitabh, Yogita bali in his pre-superstar era – a taut murder mystery -finds ref in "Johnny gaddar", which too should have been there, anyway
Ittefaq -Rajesh khanna should have been there anyway in Top 10 ahead of Khel khel mein and others

Nagesh do you think Madhumati and Parwana are murder mystery movies. If so,then, films like Baazigar,Anjaam,Darr,Aitbaar, etc must be included in the list. Here we must talk of murder mystery movies where the murderer’s identity is revealed only in the climax and he should be someone we notice in the movie earlier.Rectify me if I am wrong. You love watching mystery movies then how come you have not watched movies like sansani, neeli aankhen, hotel, goonj, telephone, dhuan, baazi, etc.Very strange.I am only 25
years and I have watched and I own almost all these films mentioned here.

  13. Bollyfan says:

Welcome & Thanks for the comment, Nagesh. :)

I had shortlisted Ittefaq but somehow it didn't work out in my top 10. Though each film would work with different people in different ways. Great to know that you liked Ittefaq that much.

Buddha Mil Gaya, Madhumati, Woh Kaun Thi, Parwana & Johnny Gaddar are all great films but they aren't murder mysteries in the real sense. They are more in the thriller format and hence didn't form a part of this countdown. Same holds for Ajnabee which was a masala potboiler with the murder being only a sub-plot.

Haven't seen Mahal & Uljhan though Anamika is a great reminder. It might have fit in here. Do keep visiting more often and also do share your thoughts. :)

  14. Nagesh says:

    Samay (2003)
i watched it after your recommendations…
It s a taut , professionally made suspense thriller of a female Police officer ably played by Sushmita sen on the trail of a serial killer.

Yes, you can't guess the murderer who is shown to be more intelligent and always one step ahead of her, precisely because he is not one of the characters you have seen in the movie till then…

That is slightly cheating the audience, because you are not giving a chance to the audience to guess and win, which is actually always how whodunits are normally done..It's not about just springing a total stranger in the last scene..but what really disappointed me was the total lack of credible motive behind the serial murders by this devilishly clever villain..

He is also one man team, lives alone and he could not have possibly had the wherewithal to carry out perfect murders of celebrity citizen victims..Its not that easy as is depicted here. Then the very jarring note at the end was that of the role of Sushmita's daughter…(That's bizarre, without being a full spoiler)

  15. Nagesh says:

One more additions to murder mysteries..

    1. Duniya ( 1968) : Starring the Ever green Dev saab and Vyjayanthimala..Good songs, strong good old story and a courtroom trial of a baffling murder case. Good drama and action with great music..what else do you want?…
and don't tell me some of the so-called masala potboilers don't make good mysteries..Murder mysteries are masala too!!

Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  16. Bollyfan says:

Nagesh : Agree whole-heartedly on your views about Samay. As I've mentioned in the list, Samay makes the cut primarily due to Sushmita's performance and the oddity of a female cop protagonist in a Bollywood murder mystery.

My comment about the few films not being in the murder mystery mould was because the identity of the murderer is not a secret in those films. Its more about how and not who. In a classic murder mystery, its the "who" that's more important. I'm not against masala potboilers at all. In fact, quite a few on this list of mine are just that…Majboor, Khel Khel Mein, Jungal Mein Mangal & Teesri Manzil…masala potboilers.

And thanks for the new addition. I have faint memories of having seen Duniya on TV long back…the only thing I remember is the song, Dooriyan Nazdeekiyan. Top 10 lists are not conclusive by any means. They remain the compiler's personal opinion and are limited to the extent of his exposure. The idea is to bring out more and more names to add to the list which by itself is a mere starting point. So please keep the additions coming. :)

Thanks BOLLYFAN for permitting my views and reviews.!!..I agree with you on your viewpoints too..
Right, here is another murder mystery that did not make your 25 list either

    SHIKAR ( 1968): ****No spoilers****

Handsome Dharmendra and a young cute Asha Parekh assisted by Johnny walker find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery in Jungle/ estate where there a no of red herrings thrown for you to chew on..
Sanjeev Kumar plays a Police inspector in charge of this case quite ably where he is baffled by an unusually nosy ex-Police Commissioner played by Rehman.
JOhnny walker's comedy tracks and at least 2 songs could have done away with , but in 1968 , who was complaining on such Rafi, Lata and Mahendra kapoor's melodies?

The film won 4 filmfare awards that year…a Murder mystery -cum- masala thriller.

Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

  18. Nagesh says:

Jangal mein Mangal was a murder " mystery" at no 5?..That was more surprising than that the identity of the bhooth itself..which was in any case an inconsequential character with a 5- second scene in the end..

The only two takeaways from this film are Kishore number "Tum Ktni khoobsoorat ho " and Pran's weird colorful costumes..No offense meant , again my friend, Bollyfan!

  20. Nagesh says:

Kab? Kyoon? aur Kahaan? is an excellent Murder mystery with a little bit of Horror thrown in for good measure , the latter making the identity of the the killer even difficult to predict. This 1970s thriller has Dharmendra playing a suave CID Officer who romances Babita on board a ship and slowly we get to the plot which involves Babita's dad who dies under mysterious circumstances leaving behind a huge " property" and an evil looking uncle Pran who is after it and her.. Nothing is at seems as the sinister plot unfolds and our innocent heroine is under threat of losing her sanity and perhaps her life.. Unless of course the hero manages to unravel the plot and save them all..It involves the mystery of dead body in a coffin and things that go bump in the night…

I am trying to recall a Hindi Murrder Mystery of 70′s which stared Dev Anand (?), IS Johar ( Sure!) etc in which an Old man ( Old actror like Nazir hussain, sapru or somebody) is found murdered on a rocking chair, Five or six suspects walk into the room and find the body after the murder, but for some reason thinking that the ‘other person’ has killed him and to save the suspected murderer, they keep planting their personal belongings like Key chain, cigar, shoe marls etc so that the evidence should point at them..What none of them know is that the murder was already committed before the firs guy planted the false evidence..

Yes, the film is “Sajan 1969″. the first half of the film is shockingly similar to Ghajini …who would have thought?
Asha Parekh has done exactly what Asin does to Aamir Khan..Yes,,even the false hero acting like the real hero in a party just as in Ghajini and then all is revealed..Here it is Manoj Kumar who is a businessman in this case..
Copycat, A R Muruga Doss, YOU!!

It is the second half where the script runs into a Murder…Then there are three suspects all of whom have left telling specific evidences of theirs at the scene of crime. what’s their motive??. The real culprit does come as a surprise, something like in the film-Dhund..(which was in fact based on Agatha Christie’s novel-’ The Unexpected Guest ‘!)…
See Sajan..For once , you don’t see the “side elevation” of Manoj Kumar and the songs ” saajan saajan pukaroon galiyon mein” and “Resham kee dori” linger with you long after the film has ended…

    Friends,

It’s very tough to classify “NON Murder Mysteries” of different periods,,There can only be some personal favourites like these.

I am unable to rank them properly, I will do it on my blog later with more description and images ….However Top 10 Non Murder Mystery films of diffrrent genres and eras clubbed into one list could be as follows:

    1. Inkaar ( 1977) – a taut kidnap cum ransom investigation stg. Vinod Khanna. An iconic cabaret dance number “O Mungda” is in this movie.

SPOILER.!.SRK’s Om Shanti Om borrowed heavly the climax part of this classic.

Amazing compilations by all. Someone mentioned Khoj, the Rishi Kapoor starrer and that was precisely the film I was searching for while looking at Bolly’s list. That was a fantastic who-dunnit totally ignored! What about the Shakti Samanta gem Howrah Bridge?

And yeah, I GOT to watch Jangal mein Mangal now :) Never thought it was a murder mystery, leave alone a good one at that!!! Always thought it was a C grade semi-porn film! :D

This “fantastic whodunit” as you call Khoj is a carbon copy of a 1965 Tamil film called Pudhiya paravai stg. Sivaji ganesan, which too was loosely inspired from Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca ( 1940). Nothing oroginal about it, ha?

Jewel thief is NOT a murder mystery..Its is however a classic masala film of Dev saab and Pran… Kohraa old is supposed to be one with all kinds of pichla janam, bhoot etc thrown in too…Being Cyris is an English Bollywood film! I heard, its not murder mystery in a strict sense

Being Dev Anand fan, I saw his two old mystery movies with Murder being the central theme in “Kala pani” ( 1958, B&W) for which he earned his first filmfare award. Madhubala and Nalini jayawant are the heroines.Director Raj Khosla ( Woh Kaun thi etc fame) has somehow messed up the (original story by AJ Cronin’s ” Beyond This Place” ) ending with the real murderer remaining a caricature without any motive towards the victim. Quite unsatisfactory, but it has real nice music by SDB and…. Madhubala of course!

The second film was a much earlier 1951 hit “BAAZI”, starring delectable Geeta Bali and Dev’s future wife Kalpana Kartik…! The story and Direction are handled by the great Guru Dutt!…As a movie and a murder mystery this scores over the former and is definitely worth a dekho!
See it for the sheer mastery Guru dutt exhibited in his debut film that too in the murder mystery genre!

The murder mystery , courtroom drama and suspense happens at the end of the movie with a satisfying climax…
The songs by SDBurman are superb..Mera man tera pyaasa (by Rafi,) Chudi nahi hai yeh( by Kishore), Apni hoton ke bansi( Kishore +Lata), Gham aaj shayar hain( Kishore solo) stand out as ever green classics..

Aamne Saamne starring Shashi kapoor and Sharmila is real good murder mystery, plotwise..The suspense and identity of the murderers and some mysterious attempts on Sharmila’s life during her honeymoon with Shashi ; Shashi’s own hidden past and his real intentions keeps you guessing..It is only some silly comedy tracks by Rajendranath and Shammi and a couple of avoidable duets that derail the film from time to time.If you can fast forward those scenes, you could enjoy this murder mystery well..

Be-reham is another good Mystery movie although the identity of the killer is already known, it is the manhunt and the closing in net for the killer by the investigating cop Shatrughan sinha is what tales the cake..Besides the criminal is none but his own respected boss,a top cop, played exemplary-ily by Sanjeev Kumar..Straight forward, no-nonsense narration, taut screenplay and suspense has viewers at the edge of the seat till the end..It is a very satisfying thriller directed by Raghunath Jhalani who also directed another sanjeev kumar’s cops and murders movie called Uljhan..

Its good to see so many mystery fans here discussing hindi mystery films. I have carefully read the list suggested by our friends. Some of the films were known to me but some were unknown. So I have started to collect and watch those movies suggested by you. Myself Suggesting some Murder Mystery film:

    1. Aamne Samne — Starring Shashi Kapoor,Sharmila Tagore.
    2. Baaz — Starring Jackie Shroff, Sunil Shetty,Karisma Kapoor.
    3. Rakth – Starring Sanjay Dutt,Sunil Shetty,Bipasa Basu (Although This film contains some Supernatural elements but still it is a perfect Murder Mystery Where the identity of the murderer is revealed only at the end.)
    4. Fun — Though it is a C grade semi porn film but still it is a murder mystery.

II knew that the golden age of murder mysteries had died since the 1970s with BR Chopras and Raj khoslas and Vijay anand (who made classics like Kanoon, Gumnaam, woh kaun thi, Ittefaq, teesri manzil and Dhund..)
1990s, the era of thus film, is not well known for murder mysteries and Dulaara proves exactly that..

Violence , cheesy obscenity, unappetizing gory bloodshed have substituted the fine art of pulse pounding, nail biting style of the old, unfortunately in this college caper where Govinda and Karisma with their dancing skills first try to impress and then, stupid, unnecessarily screaming fuming `third degree loving` cop Ranjeet and ridiculous sidekicks like Rakesh bedi make a thorough hash of the mystery story..

Final scene where the real killer is shown is quite ridiculous and when the killer had the hero in a corner and was under no pressure to confess how he did it, simply starts blurting out the long confession just for our sake saying ” you wanted to know, how I did it , na?”..This is
quite an avoidable movie on any day..see a re-run of kanoon or Dhund or Hamraaz any day…

Someone suggested a film called Saboot (1980)by Ramsays as a Murder mystery. Well it turned out to very B Grade with a predictably filmy climax..How it is called a ‘Mystery’ is itself a mystery ( No offence meant , it’s my opinion only!)..Horror part is so-so, a very raw and crude looking masked killer trying to fool us as Bhoot with a swaggering gait and atrocious makeup at exactly 12 midnight..How typical can these things get!…

Navin Nischol is called in as Investigating officer and this gentleman does anything but that…He allows four to five murders to take place and promptly arrives to see the dead bodies first and then runs around aimlessly talking tough to usual suspects….The last murder even takes place right under his nose with his men doing” chaaro taraf gher liya hain “routine of Indian filmy cops..
The only thing he really did right was romance a dishy kaajal kiran in rain song..Vidya sinha looks listless and half dead all the time. Villains scream and screech loudly fooling us to suspect them to be the real killer….Nothing to write home about…The killer’s identity is so predictable because of ‘its ‘ very suspicious behaviour all the time…A good Kishore-asha duet “ jeena bhi kya jeena hai” is wasted in this otherwise forgettable effort

On some recommendation, I saw this movie Qila…
Qila (1998) is a completely ridiculous murder mystery. Illogical and even illegal with a court ‘faisla’ sanctioned by a lawyer wherein he acquits the real murderer and the court sentences another for a different murder…The circumstances concerning the murder are very artificial and too coincidental to believe..Bah!!

The move has old hackneyed comedy, over the top melodrama and innumerable songs that continuously keep derailing the main theme.. Unfortunate that Dilip Kumar saw this film fit to sign off his illustrious career..He naturally looks very old and jaded and his trademark dialogue delivery are not a patch on his original style..

Veteran Rekha is wasted in a inconsequential side role, Mukul Dev as the young hero barely passes muster .Mamata Kulkarni well, jiggles and bounces in very ordinary songs!
    Eminently avoidable farce murder mystery..

  76. Jay says:

Perhaps there is a confusion. We are normally discussing on suspense muder movies where the identity of the real killer is shown at the climax.Am I right? Many of you are talking about movies like Qatl,Kala pani etc.In these films we know the killer’s identity from the time they are committing the murders so how come they are murder mystery? and moreover,Jangal mein mangal is rather a comedy + a lot of fun and songs movie. It is a murder mystery also but as a Gumnaam or a woh kaun thi.Even Samay is a misleading movie. The list according to me can be as this:
    1. Kanoon
    2.Woh Kaun Thi
    3.Gumnaam
    4.Goonj
    5.Baazi(1968)
    6.Dhund
    7.Apradhi Kaun(1957)
    8.Teesra Kaun(1965)
    9.Neeli Aakhen(1959)
    10.Baat Ek Raat Ki

Hamraaz is a murder mystery but only after one hour++ of watching it, same as Waqt and sajan(1969).But from the start of the above mentioned movies, we know that we are watching mystery and suspense movies.Perhaps Nagesh will agree with my point and list.Others too comment please

      Dear Jay
      Your film list:
I am yet to see Sansani, Blue Oranges, Goonj. Dhuaan, Hotel, Telephone etc. I will try…. If any of them are Ramsay films of horror mysteries, I avoid them..One film of theirs Saboot was enough! Darwaza was more than enough!!

Woh Main Nahin was an official remake of Tamil hit called Naan avan illai ( Gemini ganesan days of 60s! again remade in tamil now)…
Khoj of Rishi kapoor was also based on Tamil hit of 1964 stg Sivaji ganesan called Pudhiya Paravai…I have seen the originals…Besides Khoj was also similar to Kohra 1964 which was in turn a remake of Hitchcck’s Rebecca!
i am now trying to get Baazi of Dharam..Earlier Baazi of Dev saab directed by guru datt was also cult classic of B&W era murder mystery…

My earlier comment is not getting published somehow..Here is is repeated again:
        ++++++++++++++++++++++++
        Dear friend Jay,

        Thanks for remembering me..
Now after waiting for BOLLYFAN, I am quite sure the author of this page has left us high and dry and it is left to enthusiasts like us to continue posting…

Yes I do agree somewhat about some films here being general masala Hindi entertainers like Jangal mein Mangal, Khel khel mein etc..
Even Majboor too some extent had song and dance and some sentimental story ..
So was Hamraaz. of Sunil dutt and Raajkumar.
But in the end they were all very satisfying unlike Samay which was a ‘from the first scene murder mystery’ but did not have a reasonable/ justifiable end as a total stranger was shown as the culprit..The viewers were ‘forced not to guess the killer’..That is something I do not like..Even the famous Dev anand film ‘CID’ had the killer shown in the beginning, but it was paisa vasool all the same..
See also Naseeruddin Sha in Shart 1986. a serial killer movie..It is a manhunt..
But the best of the suspense lot was Khamosh by Vidhu V Chopra

So are ‘murderer hunting’ films like sanjeev Kumar’s Uljhan ( Murder happens in the life of hero and heroine on wedding night!) and Be-reham ( this has a very good shatrughan sinha a sincere cop gunning for sanjeev kumar his boss!)..Very good murderer / man hunt films , you see…

You can find Dev anand’s Mahal, Dharam’s kab kyon aur kahan and shikar, three good murder mystery films on Veoh website…You can find the links on onlinewatch websites..
I am very keen to see Kishore kumar’s Ek raaz, which you have..Can you perhaps upload this as even sale of this DVD at webmall and Moseerbaer has no stock!!
By the way if you wish please mail me at csn[underscore]61[at]yahoo[dot]com ( Hope this is allowed!)..Let us exchange more details and ideas..

In fact,Telephone and Hotel and Khoj are Ramsay movies.Dhuan(1981) stars Mithun.Surprisingly, the story of Khoj and Dhuan are same.In fact.Khoj is the 1986 Hollywood remake of Vanishing Act.In fact,it is ascene to scene copy.Kohra does not not resemble Khoj at all.but Anamika(2008) is a remake of Kohra which in turn was a remake of Hollywood Rebecca(1940).In fact,my top ten list is this:
        1. Kanoon
        2.Woh Kaun Thi
        3.Gumnaam

Om Jay’s recommendation I saw Baazi ( 1968) starring Dharam and Wahida ,,

It is a good murder mystery with the usual jaaydaad theme ,( famous those days), but yes, I could not suspect the killer till the end…

But the movie is unnecessarily hampered by that awkward Johnny walker and his antics and too many songs , at frequent intervals..Thanks God nowadays these are media files and you can FF them…

  90. Nagesh says:

Agar …if (1977) is alright as far as the murder and mystery part is considered but fails to become nail-biting as the suspense and storytelling is mediocre and placid..somehow the mood of a thriller is missing. But it is worth seeing just for how Anil ( Amol) kills Vijayendra and Daver( Kader Khan) starts blackmailing him.. The climax supposed to be a shocking one comes off as a tame one with a usual dis-hum dis-hum and thus leaves one a little disappointed. Zarina Wahab making up the third part of this earlier Chitchor star cast, is adequate as Amol’s wife.Nothing to mention about music score… Director Esmayeel Shroff’s maiden attempt..OK for a lazy afternoon…

Yes I believe ‘No. 20 Madras Mail’ was well-received by the Malayali audience. It had superstar Mammootty starring as himself, and all the other roles were extremely well played as well. The film dragged a little, but from the looks of your IMDB review, I’d say the original Malayalam version was better. :)

And any other murder mystery – where identitiy of the murder is not revealed untill the end.

        My friend, awara-pan,
Obviously you are not doing a correct search, I could find many links in one minute for ek nazar hindi film download on google.

        1. For example bharatmovies dot com or go to indiancinemafans dot com board and go to hindi classic movies section you can find the links to ek nazar and several other old hindi films we discussed. That is how i have seen.
        2. I also buy CD and DVD whenever easily available. Moserbaer now just costs 30 to 40/- , beats the cost and problem of Internet also…!
Mamta and Kudrat are easily available online as well as on such cheap DVDs. 3. If you like downloading so much indiancinemafans gives several links to megavideo, veoh or filestube, hotfile, rapidshare etc. Try and download all parts and then join those split rar files with hjsplit freeware!!

        4. Have utorrent and search and find good torrent with seeds and download dvdrips

        5. Or just buy 50/- to 100/- worth DVDs on webmallindia dot com or shemaroo or moserbaerhomevideo website and have it delivered to your house..why bother so much on the net??…

OK, many ideas, now you choose..A combination of all this works for me!

For Rishi kapoor Fans, Khoj (1989) is a good watch. It is again lifted from an English film, a bit of too much ‘drama’ but suspense is very tight. You can see it online or download torrent. Search!
Again Rishi kapoor’s famous film Karz (1980) was a very good thriller of a murder, with pichla janam and all. Super Music too!

Try watching Kohra 1964 too, they call it a classic mystery ( Not my top 10!!), Try Bees saal baad( old one- Biswajeet in both ), both in B&W beautifully eerie photography suiting the mood of the film. Lovely old songs, hits even today.

Try watching Mera saaya ( Sunil dutt and sadhana), a suspense thriller again… About dead wife coming back to life but husband refusing to accept even in the court because he knew he burnt her body,,So who is she?
        ..Fantastic story..Lovely songs!

Baazi 1951 was from Dev saab, the first one , good murder mystery in B&W,but it is very old! Prints and audio dubbing a bit poor then…

Baazi of Dharam in 1968 was better in colour, good movie too…

Then try Aamir khan’s. BAAZI also in 1990s, to make it a trilogy of BAAZI!!!
, a good action thriller on terrorism produced by Salim khan ,f/o salman khan..Can you believe that! ( aamir in salman’s home production!)…

One day, also see my fav hero Rajesh khanna;s “The train” a 1970 murder mystery, also a good one..You can’t guess the killer till end!

Finally see Rajesh Khanna and Hema malini in a 1980 film “Bandish” about a murder committed by Danny and how Hema comes back to life again, (in a social way..Not like a deep mystery)..But again a good watch , interesting story!

If any of you have not watched “Buddha Mil gaya” form Hrishikesh Mukherjee a Comedy cum good murder mystery, please watch it without any delay..i mean NOW! Good songs plus the fav actor in mysteries- Navin nischol and Om Prakash as the accused ‘buddha’ who might have committed several murders?
        OK for now?

Mamta ( 1966) starring Ashok kumar, Suchitra sen and Dharmendra is a good film , though a murder happens in the second half of the movie, it is not a mystery, but the way the court room scenes are handled by ashok Kumar as the lawyer are praiseworthy, It is simply a wonderful film, although not exactly a murder mystery, Just off topic, I know…I thought I can mention it, just in case anybody got fed up of watching ONLY Murder mysteries all the while..;) Good songs and very good performances of woman caught in distress of life , and accused in court for murder..Double acting by Suchitra sen too

  103. Nagesh says:

Also friends, By the way, you can watch Kasoor(-2011 ) by Vikram bhatt director once, for the suspense is good, you somehow know the murderer, although Police suspect him, but then it is not clear ‘how’?

The same director had given ‘Murder’ the first of the two films, some years ago with Emraan hashmi and it was moderately good .
But PLEASE AVOID SEEING MURDER -2 THE LATEST ONE FROM HIM, OH GOD, WHAT A HORRIBLE FILM WITH BLOOD, GORE AND HORROR,,,YUCK..
DON’T SAY I DOD NOT WARN YOU. JUST DON’T SEE MURDER 2. ( EMRAAN HASHMI AGAIN!)

  104. Nagesh says:

Sanjeev Kumar acted in two good mystery films concerning murders.

One was Uljhan (1975) with Sulakshana Pundit. a man hunt, more like a ‘woman hunt’ as the wife of a policeman is the killer and the husband is investigating it, getting closer and closer to the shocking truth- he has to catch her!! Good title song by Kishoreda!

Secondly with Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev acted in “Be-reham”(1980), a mystery concerning two police officers- one junior and one senior, but the senior cop has committed a murder and the junior is in-charge of catching the killer!
But something more thrilling than murder happens in the climax which will test their integrity and sincerity..WOW!!..What a film!!..
Seen it twice on my DVD-rip already and strongly recommend it to you all for the classy actors performances and fantastic story which is very gripping…

    Hey Guys,

Even ” International Khiladi ” starring Akshey is a murder mystery . Though it cannot be said as muder mystery but it is mystery movie.
I will be keen to watch Main Wahi hoon..

By the way i watch Budha mil gaya, Waqt & Ek Nazar all three were waste of time.

Kindly don’t waste your time on these movies.
I strongly recommend Gumnaam – 1965 which is inspired by Hollywood movie “And there were none” which i saw yesterday.
Though Woh koun thi is not a murder mystery but its still gets your attention.

Movies like Ittefaq & Khamosh are superb.

And kanoon is way ahead .

Please advice a movie which starts with a mystery let suppose police public started with investigation.
Gumnaam started with Murder, Kanoon in same way as does ittefaq.

For your kind information Awarapan,Haveli(1985) and Do Gaz Zameen Ke Neeche(1972) are not horror movies but murder mystery movies.Since they are early Ramsay movies who were popular with horror films, these two films are in suspense sort. And One 2 Ka 4 is also a mystery movie as Jackie Shroff is killed mysteriously and Shah Rukh Khan as a cop tries to locate the killer and the climax is superb.I do not know if all the films in my list are available online or not but I do own a copy of all these films and almost all discussed on this forum. It seems Goonj(1974) is not available in India.Ironically,my father bought it from India in 1997.And the one you found on YouTube with poor quality was uploaded by me.Do not worry my niece has just finished her HSC examinations and now she will be at home for more than 3 months So I will tell her to upload a maximum number of my collection on YouTube channel. In this way,all my friends on this site can enjoy watching these films.

Brother i have seen Gupt its a wonderful movie…

About BOLO – RAM … its a murder mystery but not too much suspense its all a bout investigation.. and i personally didint like it..

Stoneman murders was nice movie… its a murder trial for a serial killer… till the very end identity is kept hidden, you cann’t even gusse the killer,
But the motive seems to me was a bit un-digestable.. Anyways you can see it.. it worth watch 1 or 2 time…
88 antop hill i haven’t seen it will watch it sooner…

About Jaane bhi do yaaron.. its a wonderful movie.. i have seen it many times.. It was so interesting wiith excellent acting..

And ek ruka hua faisla is a trail against a boy.. which is copied from english movie 12 anrgy men.
Though its a gud movie within a single room.. entire movie is at a dicussion…

Ek Ruka hua faisla is a nice movie..

Arre, By the way, we did not talk about the humorous murder thriller ” Jaane bhi do yaaron( JBDY)” of 1983 involving a dead body , a photograph of a man with the gun and two innocent photographers of a Studio caught in a trap with this dead body, trying to get out of danger..It was a riotous fun with three able actors Naseeruddin Shah, satish shah and Ravi baswani in full flow and is remembered by many of my generation.. Please do see, it makes for a pleasant change!

Of Course some fans here may twitch their noses to say JBDY is not “start to end murder mystery” and those who like “cemetries and white saree ladies singing songs in the foggy nights” or “some disguised/ masked bhoot killing one by one”( Saboot & Darwaza were enough)….

As for me I have had enough of this Lady bhoot/ Atma stuff…Manoj- Sadhana’s “Woh kaun thi” and Kohra( 1964) stg Biswajeet, Waheeda were enough in this genre.. Both had large plot holes ( read unexplained spl effects, reasons and contradictions) too!

Anyone OUTSIDE India seen it yet?

Yet to get a feedback on PC’s “7 khoon maaf!”

  118. Jay says:

Generally, mystery movies are crime movies of thriller genre. They can be roughly classified in two categories. First, as Open Mystery movies and second, as Closed Mystery movies(whodunits).
In open mystery movies, we see murders being committed but without showing the killer’s face. It is revealed only in the climax.
In Closed mystery movies, we see the face of the killer while they are committing their crimes but in the film he plays the role of a good person in front of other cast till the end the actor unmasks his true identity to the police, etc.
Normally, Bollywood has a lot of closed mystery movies. But many of them are not start-to-end closed mystery movies as Bollywood adds songs, family drama, romance and comedy and a mild dose of suspense sometimes after watching a long portion of the film. I have compiled a list of such films:
    1.Khilari(1992)

    Frenz,

By the way, If I tell the story of an excellent Kannada Murder Mystery film on this forum ( which you wont see, as you are non-kannada speaking guys and are mostly bollywood film fans only) , I hope you guys do not mind..

I plan to write it in installments( 2 posts per week for some 2-3 weeks!) , with major details , revealing the killers’ id in the end, just like in the film..Now how does that sound?

    Waiting for your reply…

    ~Nagesh!

Don’t mind Nagesh, but I rather watch the movie than know the story.

Please let us know the name of the movie. Link, if possible. I may get a DVD with English subtitles if the movie is really good. Or, better yet, please give the name of the English movie whose script closely resembles that of the movie you are talking about. I don’t mind watching a good thriller/mystery in any language so far it’s a fresh meat and not a Hitchcock picture’s adaptation.

I didn’t see Gupt till date just because one of my college bummers revealed the name of the murderer. :)

Hey Nagesh I think you are underestimating me on this forum by saying ‘By the way, If I tell the story of an excellent Kannada Murder Mystery film on this forum ( which you wont see, as you are non-kannada speaking guys and are mostly bollywood film fans only) , I hope you guys do not mind..

Yes, I do not know Kannada but I am not Bollywood fans only and in this era of technology and computer systems, even all films whatever is the language can be dubbed or subtitled in any language one understands. We,in Mauritius, are French speaking people .We even speak in Creole which is also a French patoisYou know Mauritius is a multi-racial country including Hindus,Muslims,Christians,Chinese,French,English,Italians,Germans, etc, so we get the chance to watch movies in all these languages and even in schools these languages are taught so we Mauritians are very rich in languages which are recognised all over the world.I speak a lot of languages and you speak major dialects of India which are mostly spoken in India only. You know I watch a lot of French movies of different genre including Mystery movies but since this forum is based on Bollywood mystery movies, I am sharing whatever I know on this topic here but I AM NOT A BOLLYWOOD FILM FAN ONLY.Ok Nagesh.Take Care

Yes I have Jaal(1967).It stars Biswajeet,Mala Sinha and Sujeet Kumar. It is a suspense movie.Actually, both Mala Sinha and Sujeet were on a boat but unfortunately, the boat is capsized and Sujeet died. But later each and every time he appears in front of Mala Sinha in form of ghost. It is not that interesting but it is in the suspense genre.I can upload it on youtube if you really want to watch it.

        Well Jay,
bro never leak stories of suspense films :) though the taste of these films is gone when the suspense is revealed.

By the way you can upload it, we will see it, & some one has the movie ek raaz by kishore,

I seen duniya of dev sb but not that interesting,
Murder mysteries are only interesting when it starts from suspense & ends with suspense..

I saw Apradi kaun, what a movie total suspense from begning to the end, and it was really nice to see an old movie with such a nice concept.

Regarding Ek Raaz, I have it now after a long fight with Shemaroo who gave me a faulty DVD and I had to buy VCD again from a website,.
Anyway. it is NOT a FULL SCALE MURDER MYSTERY movie like many of you prefer it, but a murder takes place in the last quarter of the film, and it is not important as we can guess who the murderer is,
To be fair, the movie is a comedy- musical family film, I saw because I like Kishore da.
Merry X mas and new year to you all

    Chakravyuha ( 1978)
OK, On the eve of the New Year 2012 here is the review of a good suspense – spy film ( jasoos) based on the Hollywood film: The 39 steps.

Rajesh Khanna, is a lover boy engaged to be married to Neetu Singh and is an innocent common man.
But he is unwittingly drawn into a spy network intrigue drama involving an assassination to be done at New Delhi.
A spy ( Vinod Mehra) stages his own suicide , seeks shelter in RK’s house and promptly gets murdered but leaves behind a tell -all mini dairy in a bottle of sugar..with instructions that IT MUST reach IGP OF Delhi before a certain date , otherwise!
Then the movie takes quite unpredictable and even uncharacteristic turns leading to a good satisfying climax.
It is one of the better ‘manhunt and chase’ variety of suspense thrillers seen in Hindi.
See it if you like this genre of ‘suspense and chase’ films. ( OK, it is not a MURDER MYSTERY, so Don’t blame me).

Wish You a Happy new Year 2012

I Just receive from a friend & added for friends who watch malyalam movies.
There was a Mallu movie named CID starring Mammoty, the movie starts with a big house in Kerala with two brothers both doctors two wifes of these two brothers a widowed woman she is their sis and lives with them her daughter who is studying in a college, a son of the elder brother he is a cop, a servant.

The wife of the elder brother dies as she sees some strange structure in night a girl who is a guest comes to stay for 2 days one day morning she is found dead near the steps of the hall which leads to 1st floor it is assumed that she came out in night saw the ghost and fell so she died. A tantrik is caled and the main pooja room is locked.

Mammothy comes to investigate as he is CID the plot starts is r these two deaths related to each other or done by two different ppl with diff motive. How he solves the case and the motive behind it is the real fun.

A clue how he starts is the girl who is a guest died by slipping of the steps, in midnight but why did she come out what made her come out was the question and after a long hunt the two different kilers with different motive are caught they r very much a part of the movie from beggining no one can guess
